Future Watch: Morgan Geekie Hockey Cards, Carolina Hurricanes – Morgan Geekie was drafted by the Carolina Hurricns with the 67th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. This 6-3 center has a lot of talent, and it didn’t take too long for that to emerge.
During the 2013-14 WHL season, Geekie got his first taste of major junior action, playing in one game with the Tri-City Americans. The audition was fruitful as he got his first tally. The following season, he played in first nine games with Tri-City and counted two assists. Geekie also spent time with the MJHL’s Neepawa Natives, counting two points in two games.
In 2015-16, his first full season in the W, the pivot had 12 goals and 25 points in 66 games. The following campaign, Geekie’s goal scoring was on display as he potted 35 along with 55 helpers in 72 games. He did get in four playoff games where he got one goal.
In 2017-18, this forward scored 30 goals with 54 assists in just 68 games. In 14 playoff games, he sniped 17 goals (leading the league) and 10 assists.
In 2018-19, Geekie turned pro and played for the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL. In 73 games, Geekie had 19 goals and 46 points. He was the fifth leading scorer on the team. The rookie scored a big double-overtime goal against the Toronto Marlies to give his team the 4-3 win and 4-2 series win. He was a big reason the Checkers were eventual Calder Cup Champions as he counted eight playoff goals and 18 points to lead all rookies.
In 2019-20, the Strathclair, Manitoba native embarked on his second season with Charlotte. In 55 games, he had 22 goals and 42 points. In March, he was called up to play his first games for the Hurricanes. In his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Geekie had two goals and an assist, pacing his team to a 6-2 win. In two games (prior to the Covid pause), his totals were three goals and one assist.

When the Canes returned to play, Geekie was there for their playoff run. In eight games, he registered one assist.
Collectors can find his rookie card in 2020-21 Upper Deck MVP and O-Pee-Chee, and his Young Guns Rookie is in 2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey, which arrives in the very near future.
