Future Watch: Philip Broberg Hockey Cards, Edmonton Oilers – Philip Broberg was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers with the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. The 6-3 defenseman is gifted offensively which stems from his early days on the forward line.

For years, Broberg has been moving up the ladder in Sweden. In 2018-19, as a 17 year old, he played for AIK in the Allsvenskan league and had nine points in 41 games, primarily playing against men.

In that same year, playing against his age group, Broberg had six points in seven games in the u18s. He won the Best Defenseman honors, was voted an All-Star, and took home a gold medal. He also competed in the World Junior Hockey Chmpionship, counting one point in four games. He’s very fast with the puck and can enter the offensive zone quickly, ready to jumpstart an offense; but he is still just scratching the surface as far as showing up on the scoresheet in international play.

In 2019-20, Broberg played in the SHL, one of the best leagues in the world. During that season, he played in his second World Junior Championship, and this time, he took home a bronze medal. For AIK, he saw more minutes but still wasn’t used in all situations.

In 2020-21, before most leagues started action, the Swede was back at it for AIK, and recorded eight points in his first 23 games. Now 19, it’s all starting to click for him. His inspired play was recognized not only with selection to his third WJC team, but he was also named captain of the Swedish squad. Broberg is expected to be a star player and a key offensive contributor for them.
