The 56th NHL Entry Draft will be held on June 22-23rd at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX. As a result, here are my Top Five forwards and defenseman.

  • Brady TkachukMatthew is his brother and already a successful NHLer. His dad, Keith, is an NHL legend and Hall of Famer. Brady is 6-3 and currently 196 pounds. He’s still growing into his body and that’s scary. He had a fine season with Boston University last year netting eight goals and 31 points in 40 games as a true freshman. He will have great hobby popularity when he plays in the NHL.
  • Filip Zadina – This Czech sensation is a flat-out goal scorer. He’s a very gifted player who will capture the imagination of players and collectors. At 6-0, 197 this right-winger has the stuff and should play in the NHL right away.
  • Andrei Svechnikov – This slick skating Russian right winger has a great shot and great overall ability. He should go second in the draft and is expected to play in the NHL in October. The 6-2, 192-pound player is fun to watch.
  • Oliver Wahlstrom – This right-wing American played for the National Team Development program. He was one of the best players in the history of the team. At 6-1, 208, he’s hard to contain and he’ll score a lot of points in the NHL someday.
  • Joel Farabee – The New York native has speed and a pro wrist shot. He’s the third player in this list from the NTDP. They were a great team with a lot of talent. At 6-0, 162, he has to build his body up a bit more before collectors will see him in sets.

Future Watch: Russ Cohen’s Top 2018 NHL Draft Prospects – Defenseman

  • Rasmus Dahlin – This famous Swede will be the first overall pick in the draft. Buffalo Sabres fans will love this 6-3 defenseman who can do everything well on the ice. He’ll play right away and, in a few years, could be one of the best in the sport.
  • Noah Dobson – How do you follow up a Memorial Cup championship? Become a top-10 pick in the NHL Draft. The Acadie-Bathurst star has a great blend of offense and defense. At 6-3, 177 pounds, he’ll have to wait a little while before he can play in the NHL.
  • Quinn Hughes – This 5-10, 178-pound Michigan star is special. He see’s things others don’t. He out-thinks the opposition and has an exceptional offensive game and skating ability. He may play in the NHL next year. It’s up in the air. Collectors will collect him and his brother, Jack, could go first overall next season.
  • Evan Bouchard – At 6-0, 196, he has strength, smarts and a great wrist shot and one-timer. He’s a top-10 hopeful. The Canadian future star will have a chance to play in the NHL in the next few seasons.
  • Ty Smith – Some may not think he deserves to be here, but his offense is great, and his defense is very solid. At 5-11, 176, he’ll need a few years to get stronger and when he does collectors will be very happy.
