Future Watch: Tampa Bay Rays Baseball Cards, trio to collect –The Tampa Bay Rays have a deep farm system. Teams that don’t spend the most money have to find more talent than most. Still searching for their first World Series title, this trio of prospects will take them far. Collectors collect the best players, and they have some names they can’t ignore. Tampa has made some shrewd trades, and they could start having an impact in the next few seasons.

Alika Williams was drafted as a shortstop with a lot of credentials. The Rays selected him 37th overall. That’s still a first-round pick, and this pick was acquired in a big trade with the St. Louis Cardinals that brought them Randy Arozarena and Jose Martinez. Williams was a high school star at Rancho Bernardo in San Diego, California. In his sophomore season, he hit .402 with 22 RBI. He decided to not go to the Yankees, who drafted him late in 2017, instead he enrolled at Arizona State University. As a freshman, Williams started 54 of 55 games with a .280 batting average and 20 RBI. His junior season was cut short by COVID-19, where he hit a home run and had eight RBI in 17 games. Williams is a smooth fielder with a fluid swing that he can pull the ball or go inside out. He will take a while to get to Tampa, but collectors should keep an eye on him.

Instead of an update on Arozarena, I thought Heriberto Hernandez was worth mentioning here. The Rays acquired him from the Texas Rangers in the Nate Lowe trade in December of 2020. Back in 2019, Hernandezplayed for two teams, finishing out his season with the Spokane Indians. This talented prospect hit 17 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs with 49 RBI, and a .345 batting average. Showing his versatility, Hernandezplayed first base and outfield as well. As part of the 40-man roster, Hernandez will play for the Charleston RiverDogs the Rays Low-A affiliate this spring. With the power he has in his swing the Rays will find a position for him, and catcher may be it. That’s where they need help at the major league level.

Wander Franco was signed by the Rays as an international free agent in 2017. Since he was profiled here before, here’s an update. He’s closer to making the big club even without playing minor league baseball in 2020. Franco is still a top prospect in the game, and the shortstop is only 20. In the 2021 Dominican Winter League, he hit a cool .350 with a homer and two RBI with six runs scored in five games. When the minor league year begins in May, Franco should start in AAA. He has power, speed, and a good glove. His next promotion hinges on the kind of season this prospect has in 2021.
