Future Watch: Victor Soderstrom Hockey Cards, Arizona Coyotes – Victor Soderstrom was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes with the 11th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. This slick skating defenseman is special. He might not get talked about enough, but he should play in the NHL this season, barring injury, and he has carved a fast path to the desert.
Soderstrom has been playing on the various levels of hockey in Sweden after first signing on with the Brynas system as a 14 year old(!). In the J18, while playing in the Allsvenskan league, the second-highest level in the country, Soderstrom had the most assists by a defenseman, two years running (16 in 2016 and 19 in 2017). He was a young player on the rise with a solid two-way game.
The 2018-19 season was the biggest in Soderstrom’s development. He played in 44 games in the SHL getting four goals and seven points. Those are good numbers for a player not getting a lot of ice time, no power play, and possibly third-pairing assignments. Soderstrom’s point total was the most by a U18 junior playing in the league. Devils prospect, Jesper Boqvist, incidentally, was one of his teammates. During that season, he played in the World U18s getting a point in four games while representing Sweden.
In 2019-20, Soderstrom had a breakthrough season in the SHL getting five goals and 16 points in 35 games. He also played in the U20 World Junior Championship and shined, scoring six points in seven games against some elite competition and skated away with a bronze medal.
Collectors can find his first NHL rookie card in 2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1.

Thus far for the 2020-21 season, Soderstrom playing on loan for AIK in Allsvenskan. In his first 12 games, he tallied six points. He’s playing there to stay sharp, and they’ll allow him to play for the Coyotes on a moment’s notice where the SHL isn’t allowing that.
Soderstrom has great vision, and he’s terrific on the power play. Look for him to push for the Calder whenever he gets his NHL break.
