In the Clinch: Pyfer Big Favorite Over Hermansson, UFC Vegas 86 – When UFC middleweight Joe Pyfer speaks, most people listen.
Pyfer (12-2-0), 27, has steamrolled almost everybody since coming from the Dan White Contender Series. His debut in September 2022 ended with an impressive TKO victory over Alen Amedovski.
Pyfer’s combination of grappling and striking powers his attack, but now he will be tested by seasoned veteran and No. 11 Jack Hermansson (23-8-0), 35, in the main event this Super Bowl weekend.
Hermansson has split his last six fights and is coming off a loss to Roman Dolidze in December 2022. He was supposed to face Brendan Allen last June, but had to pull out with an injury.
‘The Joker’ knows everyone expects him to be a stepping stone for the up-and-coming Pyfer. Expect the Swede to have some tricks up his sleeve.
Pyfer is justified being the huge favorite in this fight, despite a big inexperience disadvantage. He is where Hermansson was eight years ago: the hungry guy taking out the older veterans.
Pyfer knows a win won’t get him a title shot, but somewhere near the top 10. He is faster and has the strength advantage to put Hermansson on the defensive from the beginning.
Hermansson will need to find a way to counterstrike and take advantage of any mistakes Pyfer might make. Do not let Pyfer clinch or grapple, make him work on the feet and score as many points as possible.
We saw Nassourdine Imavov take Roman Dolidze’s No. 8 ranking last week at UFC Fight Night 35. I suspect the same thing will happen if Pyfer wins. Hermansson could fight someone like Imavov if he wins and try to move towards the top five.
Pyfer represents the Kansas City Chiefs. Hermansson represents the San Francisco 49ers.
