NBA Future Watch: Anthony Black Basketball Cards, Orlando Magic – Anthony Black’s father played professional basketball, and his mother played collegiate soccer. With his own high school football stint mixed in, Black inhabits a myriad of athletic skill sets. A childhood split between Texas and Germany imbued Black with the mixture of perspectives that helped him to broaden his game.
Black’s breakthrough junior season at Coppell High School in Coppell, TX saw him post 16.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 3.5 APG and 2.0 SPG. Notwithstanding eligibility issues as a senior, Black became a five-star prospect. That due partially by helping to lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2022 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Black was a McDonald’s All-American and an invitee to the Iverson Classic. In addition, he was selected to USA Basketball’s 2022 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team.
Black had an option to play college football but chose to concentrate on the hardcourt. He established himself early at Arkansas, leading all scorers at the Maui Invitational with 22.3 PPG. On a deep Razorback squad, Black took the role of stat sheet filler with 12.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 3.9 APG and 2.1 SPG. Matched against fellow top prospect Grady Dick in the NCAA Tournament, Black held him to seven points. That established his bona fides in the eyes of pro scouts.
Picked sixth in the 2023 NBA Draft by Orlando, Black is targeted for both guard spots. That should help with playing time in a crowded backcourt. At either position, Black can assert himself strongly with his size. He has a strong all-around game. However, he does need to emphasize expanding his shooting radius. Predictability in the paint must also be minimized as Black works toward maximizing the disparate elements of his game. Proper development can unlock Black as one of the most versatile and dominant players in the NBA.
