NBA Future Watch: Dalen Terry Basketball Cards, Chicago Bulls – Dalen Terry rose on the 2022 NBA Draft boards despite limited opportunities on deep teams in his two years at Arizona – the strongest indication available about the confidence in his great upside. Once part of the AAU program Compton Magic along with Johnny Juzang, Isaiah Mobley, Evan Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, Terry is now taking his place alongside them.
A standout on the Greater Phoenix hardwood scene growing up, Terry built to a senior season at Hillcrest Prep with 15.3 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 8.9 APG, 3.1 SPG and 2.1 BPG. That cemented him as a four-star recruit and led to a scholarship offer from the Wildcats. Those numbers also established Terry as one of the foremost all-around swingmen in recent memory. His offensive and defensive skills could render him capable of contributing strongly in some form in every game.
His range of skills came in handy for two years in Tucson with Terry needing to fill a variety of roles. His offensive opportunities were sporadic at best. Only Terry’s sophomore season Pac-12 rankings provide any insight into his true value: second in AST/TO, sixth in APG, eighth in FG% and ninth in SPG. Other numbers from the second season that indicated great promise for the future were .364 3%, .736 FT%, and 7.0 RPG and 5.6 APG, both on a Per 40 Minutes basis.
Having the guts to declare for the draft despite never getting the opportunity to be a featured star in college, Terry still rocketed to the middle of the first round. This was due partially to a mighty combine showing and landed him in Chicago at #18. With a wingspan that spreads seven feet on a frame five inches shorter, Terry’s ability to serve as a defensive stopper all over the floor will be apparent early on. This will be necessary to Terry’s development, since the Bulls don’t have room to reserve for his offense early on.
Terry will continue what he’s done the past two seasons, impacting the game in many ways, while tightening his offensive game for the big leagues. Specifically, the mid-range shot and spot-up shooting overall will get work as Terry provides defense and outstanding secondary playmaking in the interim. At his young age on a veteran team, Terry has the chance to grow into the kind of star that Second City hoops fans have been crying out for since the Last Dance. That would ensure a vaunted place in NBA history.
