NBA Future Watch: Jaime Jaquez Jr. Basketball Cards, Miami Heat – Jaime Jaquez Jr. was the first senior taken in the 2023 NBA Draft, landing in Miami with the 18th pick. The personnel-savvy Heat have a strong eye for developmental talent, but a four-year player doesn’t immediately come to mind in terms of upside. However, Jaquez – nicknamed Juan Wick for his appearance and Mexican ancestry – is demonstrating that, for as much versatility as he flashed offensively at UCLA, there are still layers to be unwrapped at the pro level.
The son of two college basketball players, Jaquez made an impact right off the bat for Camarillo High School. He posted 15.3 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 2.3 APG and 2.6 SPG as his team made the state semifinals. Jaquez kept progressing all the way through his senior season with 31.7 PPG, 11.7 RPG, 3.7 APG and 2.1 SPG. Then, he led his team to the Coastal Canyon League title. Jaquez managed all this while also pitching for the Camarillo High baseball team.
Choosing to play his college ball at UCLA, Jaquez locked down a starting role almost immediately. Leading the team in FT% in Pac-12 games at .846, Jaquez showed his offensive potential as a freshman. Similar to high school, Jaquez got better each of his four years. He put up better numbers as a senior than as a freshman in PPG, RPG, APG, SPG, BPG, FT%, FG% and 3%.
