NBA Future Watch: Jalen Hood-Schifino Basketball Cards, LA Lakers – Jalen Hood-Schifino has very athletic genes. His mother and an uncle played college basketball. His father played college football and an uncle played in the NFL. Hood-Schifino was selected by the Lakers with the 17th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The hope is that he will be a key player in keeping the championship window open for Lebron James and Anthony Davis.
Before his junior season of high school, Hood-Schifino made the move that he would later cite as the key to get him ready for college and beyond. He transfered to national power Montverde Academy. Those last two years saw Hood-Schifino attain all-star status, as his team won back-to-back GEICO High School Basketball National Titles. Hood-Schifino spent time under the tutelage of NBA veteran Thaddeus Young on the AAU squad Team Thad. He also spent time working out with Paul George. An invitation to the Jordan Brand Classic locked in Hood-Schifino as a top prospect and he arrived at Indiana as their highest-rated recruit since Romeo Langford in 2018.
Hood-Schifino proved impactful early as a Hoosier, posting 33 points on January 8, 2023, against Northwestern. Six weeks later, Hood-Schifino broke the program’s freshman scoring record with 35 points (and seven rebounds) against Purdue. 13.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3.7 APG, .776 FT%, and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year Award attracted NBA attention. It was enough attention for him to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft.
With the Lakers, Hood-Schifino will have the time to round out his game without being rushed. Greater consistency on outside shooting remains the top targeted area. Hood-Schifino is presently a good defensive player and an excellent slasher and mid-range scorer. As a fully realized offensive weapon, Hood-Schifino is poised to become a high-profile star in a Lakers uniform. And just imagine how much his already-strong point guard skills will improve with Lebron as a teammate!
