Last October was the summit with fellow mega-prospect Victor Wembanyama. The two-game series was the first-ever matchup of future pros to gain mainstream attention outside of college basketball. Henderson was one of the top attractions at the 2023 NBA Summer League. He posted 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds in the opener before being shut down with a minor and temporary shoulder issue.

Henderson grew up in Marietta, GA in a family that included three sisters who played collegiate basketball. He went through one of the most remarkable progressions in the history of high school basketball. He went from coming off the bench as a freshman to playing professionally for G League Ignite in lieu of his senior season. In between, Henderson had two tremendous years. As a sophomore, Henderson’s 49 points – including the game-winning shot – in the first round of the state playoffs led to an ensuing run to the semifinals. That season he averaged 24 PPG, 6 RPG, 3 APG, and 3 SPG. He earned Class 5A Player of the Year and first-team 5A All-State honors.

Kell High School record for points in a game fell to him with 53 points and the career scoring record followed. Kell High reached the state championship finals as Henderson averaged 32 PPG, 7 RPG, and 6 APG. The campaign included Class 6A Player of the Year and first-team 6A All-State honors.

As the youngest player in G League history the next fall, Henderson broke out in his second game, notching 31 points, six rebounds, and five assists on November 26, 2021. By the end of the season, Henderson was the top point guard prospect in the 2023 NBA Draft class. It was a distinction that he never surrendered. Year Two with the Ignite demonstrated great versatility, with 16.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 6.8 APG, and 1.1 SPG.

Now with Portland, Henderson is set to replace Damian Lillard as the team’s point guard and franchise player. Those are incredibly large shoes to fill, but not daunting for a player of his abilities and confidence. A superlative ball-handler, passer, and finisher at the rim, Henderson’s largest remaining task will be extending his reliable shot radius back. He’ll also need to translate more of his off-the-charts athleticism to elite defense. Henderson carries the weight of immense expectations but has met them at every level thus far. He is poised to match or even exceed them at the NBA level.
