NBA Future Watch: Tari Eason Basketball Cards, Draft Prospect – Tari Eason could not have asked for a better present for his 21st birthday on May 10. His status is arguably the fastest-rising talent on the 2022 NBA Draft boards. Lauded for his productivity and explosiveness, Eason is a favorite of teams who are looking beyond what he was given a chance to achieve in college and ahead to his professional potential.
A 6’8” combo forward with the skills to defend shooting guards as well, Eason was coached by former NBA star Brandon Roy at Garfield High School in Seattle. Building up from receiving scant opportunities in his first two years to a breakout senior season, Eason led Garfield to a 3A state championship. The title game victory came over O’Dea High School – and potential #1 pick in this year’s draft Paolo Banchero.
A consensus four-star recruit, Eason ended up at Cincinnati. However, on a deep roster, Eason ended up tied for sixth in MPG in 2020-21 and fifth in FGA, setting the stage for a transfer to LSU.
Eason’s stock rose as a Tiger, with several key metrics improving from the year before: PPG (7.3 to 16.9), RPG (5.9 to 6.6), SPG (1.2 to 1.9), FG% (.462 to .511), 3% (.241 to .359) and, most spectacularly, FT% (.574 to .803). Topping 20 points on 11 occasions and posting four 20-10 games, Eason provided by far the widest look at his ever-widening skill set and attracted enough positive attention to declare for the draft.
With an incredible motor, elite rebounding and on-ball defensive capabilities, it is the expansion of Eason’s offensive game – which is still in progress – that holds the key to his superb NBA upside. Supremely impressive in transition, Eason’s evolution as a shooter is not complete, as the mechanics still require some tweaking, but his FT% indicates great potential in that regard. Eason’s workouts are building tremendous momentum heading into the draft, as teams dream of finding the next Jimmy Butler two-way prototype stud. If Eason’s offensive evolution continues, he can achieve that status and become one of the NBA’s biggest stars.
