NFL Future Watch: Deonte Banks Football Cards, NY Giants – Deonte Banks was drafted by the New York Giants with the 24th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. This cornerback has a full toolbox. Getting drafted by a high-profile team that has had its ups and downs is a perfect place to cut his teeth.
He first starred at Edgewood High School in Baltimore, Maryland. After transferring to a few other schools, he committed to the University of Maryland.
In 2019, his freshman year, he played in 11 games. He made 22 solo tackles, 28 in total. He added one interception and three passes defended.
During the pandemic, he only played in five games. Banks made 11 tackles, 10 of them solo, an important statistic. Add a pass defended, and it was a good year considering.
In 2021, in the second game of the season, Banks suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. That hurt. He needed to play in more games to continue to develop. The injury and the pandemic held him back to some degree.
In 2022, he was healthy and played in 12 games. He had a career-high 38 tackles, and 25 were solo. Banks added an interception, nine passes defended, a block, and a 19-yard kick return. He was ready for the NFL Draft.
In the 2023 NFL Combine, he performed well. He ran a terrific 4.31 in the 40-yard dash, and he had an amazing 42.5” vertical leap. He didn’t need to do anything else. Banks was ready to be drafted. It was just a matter of which team would take him.
He is a starter for the Giants. In his first seven weeks, he had one interception, one tackle for a loss, and five pass deflections. The Giants and Jets share a building, and they are playing each other this season. Banks didn’t do well in college against the Jets’ best receiver, Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson. He wants to avenge that.
