NFL Future Watch: Jake Haener Football Cards, New Orleans SaintsNFL Future Watch: Jake Haener Football Cards, New Orleans SaintsJake Haener was drafted by the New Orleans Saints with the 127th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Sometimes fourth-round picks make it. Sometimes they can hit big like Joe Theismann, Rich Gannon, Dak Prescott, or Kirk Cousins. Haener has a chance to be on this list.

Haener starred in Monte Vista High School in Danville, California. He was a nationally ranked three-star recruit, and that got him noticed by the Washington Huskies. That kept him on the West Coast, so it seemed like a good fit.

In 2017, Haener red-shirted his first season with the Huskies. That happens to a lot of players. He was the backup quarterback that season.

In 2018, still the backup, he was 9 for 13 for 107 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Low playing time would get him to re-think his position with the Huskies. He ultimately decided to switch schools and attend Fresno State, even closer to home. Based on transfer rules, he had to sit out a full season.

In 2020, in six games during the pandemic, Haener was 150 for 232 with 2,021 yards and 14 touchdowns against five interceptions. His 64.7% completion percentage was very good, and he had three rushing touchdowns.

In 2021, Haener entered the transfer portal again and then pulled out and stayed with Fresno State. It’s a good thing he did. In 2021, he played in all 13 games as the starter. He was 329 for 490 with 4,096 yards and 33 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He added three touchdowns rushing as well.

His 10-3 record was stellar, and that earned him Second-team, All-Mountain West honors.

In 2022, Haener played in 10 games. He was 252 for 350, good for a career-high 72% passing percentage. He only threw for 2,896 yards with 20 touchdowns and three interceptions. Add two more rushing touchdowns, and it was a solid season with a career-high 158.6 quarterback rating. He was named to the First-team All-Mountain West.

He’s the current third-string quarterback who performed well in preseason.
