NFL Future Watch: Josh Downs Football Cards, Indianapolis Colts – Josh Downs was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He first starred at North Gwinnett High School in Georgia. There, he had 187 receptions for 3,019 yards and 32 touchdowns. Downs played in the 2020 All-American Bowl and shortly after committed to the University of North Carolina.
Some freshmen sit out the entire season, but not this talented receiver. Instead, he played in 10 games during the pandemic. He ended up with seven receptions for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Downs played mostly on special teams, but he was out on the gridiron getting important experience.
As a sophomore, he was slated to be the team’s top receiver. He played in 13 games and caught 101 passes for 1,335 yards and eight touchdowns. Downs averaged 13.2 yards per catch. For the first time, he was named to the first-team All-ACC.
After a record-setting second season, Downs was back for one for a year. In 11 games, he had 94 receptions for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns. Downs averaged 10.9 yards per catch, just under his sophomore season. For the second time, he was named to first-team All-ACC. He was ready to head into the NFL Draft.
At the 2023 NFL Combine, he ran a 4.53 in the 40-yard dash. His 38.5” vertical leap was good too. Nothing eye-popping. Couple that with the bit of a down year, and all of a sudden, he’s a third-rounder.
Downs had a good training camp and was playing immediately, but his targets weren’t many until later in the season. In week six he scored his first touchdown, and the next week he had his first 100-yard game. He got 125 yards.
At 5’10”, he’s not the biggest guy. On the season, he caught 68 passes for 771 yards and two touchdowns. His catch percentage was 69.4. All said, a solid rookie season.
