NFL Future Watch: Khalil Herbert Football Cards, Chicago BearsNFL Future Watch: Khalil Herbert Football Cards, Chicago Bears – Khalil Herbert was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. This 5’9” running back has always had to prove himself, and that’s gotten him pretty far in his career. Now he has snuck on the scene in Chicago.

Herbert played in eight games as a true freshman for the University of Kansas back in 2016. He had 44 rushes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. That’s good production for the meager playing time he was getting.

As a sophomore, Herbert started six games. He managed 120 carries for 663 yards and four touchdowns. Some players get short-yardage touchdowns, and some guys get first downs to keep the drives going. Herbert is one of those guys. He’ll catch some passes too.

His junior year was solid as well, finding the end zone five times gaining 499 yards. In 2019, Herbert only played in four games gaining 384 yards and two touchdowns. Then he left the team.

In 2020, Herbert transferred to Virginia Tech as a graduate transfer. He got his degree and was looking for more success on the gridiron. Herbert ran for 1,200 yards, the first running back to do that since 2015. He returned kicks and his all-purpose yardage was terrific. In a game against Duke, the running back had 358 all-purpose yards. He had a 60-yard touchdown run in that game as well. He was named to the Second-team All-ACC.

On his pro day, Herbert ran a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. His 18.18 MPH speed reading ensured he would be drafted. He is a bit older, but the Bears took a chance. In Week 7 against the world champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Herbert ran for 100 yards on just 18 carries. Now the Bears are finding touches for him since their #1 running back is healthy again.

One card worth considering is Herbert’s 2021 Panini Origins Rookie Card. It’s a card from camp. At that point, he was struggling to carve out a role with the team.

One last card to highlight is his 2021 Panini Prestige Rookie Card. He’s pictured in his college gear, and he’s holding the rock looking downfield. We know what happens when this speedster has some room to move on the field. Herbert is one of those late-round success stories.
