NFL Future Watch: Lukas Van Ness Football Cards, Green Bay Packers – Lukas Van Ness was drafted by the Green Bay Packers with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He’s 6’5” around 270 pounds and plays defensive end which is bad news for the opposing quarterback.
He first starred in Barrington High School in Barrington, Illinois. He was a two-sport star there playing football and ice hockey. Van Ness was a three-star recruit who had Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, and Kansas after him. He eventually chose Iowa.
Van Ness was redshirted in his true freshman season with Iowa. That’s not a surprise since that’s a big school with a lot of talent.
In his freshman year, 2021-22, he had 33 tackles, 17 of them were solo. He added seven sacks and one pass defended. That was a solid start for this future star.
In 2022-23, he played in 13 games. He had a career-high in tackles with 38 and 17 solo. Van Ness had 11 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks.
He was done with school and declared himself ready for the 2023 NFL Draft, but first there would be the NFL Combine.
He impressed scouts at the combine running a 4.58 in the 40-yard dash. His 31-inch vertical leap and 17 reps on the bench press were a sign that he would get drafted on day two. He didn’t have enough sacks to be a Day 1 draftee.
By September 10th last season, the rookie notched his first NFL sack. Van Ness got into 17 games and got 24 solo tackles, 32 in total, with four sacks. Van Ness added eight tackles for a loss and 10 quarterback hits. These numbers will continue to improve.

One card to get would be Van Ness’s 2023 Panini Prizm Green Pulsar card. It’s close to a color match and I like that the photo shows him waiting to get to the quarterback.
Another solid card is his 2023-24 Panini Absolute Rookie. The black borders are sharp and once again the player looks like he’s in a pre-rush stance.
One last card is his 2023-24 Panini Rookies and Stars. I like the design and the fact that Van Ness is running towards something from the center of the card, it looks cool. It’s some nice detail on a base rookie.
Make sure you put him on your list. The Packers have a history of good defensive players and next year could be a breakout season for him as well.
