NFL Future Watch: Sam Howell Football Cards, Washington Commanders – Sam Howell was drafted in the fifth round by the Washington Commanders in the 2022 NFL Draft. This North Carolina resident has a 6’1”, 220-pound frame coupled with an accurate and strong arm. But as the NFL draft goes sometimes, he slipped all the way to the fifth round.
Howell first starred at Sun Valley High School in Monroe, North Carolina. He threw for 13,415 yards and 145 touchdowns during his time there. The QB also ran the ball for 3,621 yards and 60 touchdowns. He went from there to the nearby University of North Carolina.
During his freshman season, he debuted against South Carolina, where he passed for 245 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-20 win. He finished the season with 3,347 yards and 38 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Howell won the ACC Rookie of the Year Award.
In his sophomore season, the talented quarterback threw for 3,586 yards and 30 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He earned second-team All-ACC honors.
In 2020, Howell became just the second Tarheel quarterback to throw for 300 yards and add 100 rushing yards in the same game. He ended up throwing for 3,056 yards with 24 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Howell graduated in December of 2021 and decided to forego his senior season to enter the NFL Draft in 2022.
Howell ran a good 4.87 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. His passing ratings were very good and a 9 1/8” hand size was deemed good. None of this should have dropped him in the draft but not playing his senior season hurt him against his competition.
Training camp 2022 is off to a good start for Howell. Many are impressed and some are saying he is already pushing for the backup quarterback job. Preseason games will tell that story, but it’s safe to say this guy can play the position.

Then you could pivot to his 2022 Panini Prestige Rookie Card. The card has a nice design, and the picture shows him running with the ball. And when he does that, he gets more than a few yards.
One more choice could be his 2022 Leaf Ultimate Draft Autographed card. He has a unique autograph that collectors will like. This guy is currently under the radar, but by next season that may not be the case.
