NHL Future Watch: Juraj Slafkovsky Hockey Cards, Montreal Canadiens – Juraj Slafkovsky was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens with the first overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. The big Slovak has a pro body and a great shot coupled with a big personality. He could be a star in the league in the near future.
In 2018-19, Slafkovsky played hockey in Finland. While playing for the TPS U18 team his scoring prowess showed. He had 22 goals and 30 assists in 39 games. He played four games with the U20 team and had three points in four games. Playing up was no problem.
In 2020-21, he spent most of his time with the TPS U20 team. The big winger had eight goals and 13 points in 16 games. Not bad for a young player. He was getting on the scouts’ radar.
In 2021-22, he started out the season with the U20 team and later graduated to play in Liiga for TPS. In 31 games, scoring five goals with five assists was good. He excelled in the playoffs with seven points in 18 playoff games.
During the 2021-22 season, Slafkovsky played in the Olympics representing his country. He had seven goals in seven games. Then he had three goals and six assists in eight games in the World Championships. He won an Olympic Bronze to go along with his Liiga silver medal. The legend started to grow and there were rumblings he could be the top pick. However, nobody knew for sure until his name was announced at the draft in Montreal.
In 2022-23, Slafkovsky made the Canadiens out of camp. He had played a ton of hockey the season before. That meant he didn’t have a lot of time to rest and train for the upcoming season. He got to play in 39 games scoring just ten points. He was struggling and then he was reported with a lower-body injury in January, and it was announced he would be out for the next three months.
