NHL Future Watch: Kent Johnson Hockey Cards, Columbus Blue Jackets – Kent Johnson was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the fifth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. This lanky center, has speed, a high skill level, and the ability to keep his puck on his stick. He’s a dangerous offensive player. The Jackets knew that when they selected him.
After playing just over two full seasons in the BCHL, Johnson was a known commodity. He starred for the Trail Smoke Eaters. In 2018-19, he scored 20 goals and 46 points in 57 games. In 2019-20, Johnson added 41 goals and 60 assists in 52 games. That included seven points in four playoff games. He led the league in goals and assists, and he was the league MVP.
In 2020-21, Johnson started playing for the University of Michigan. As a freshman, he had nine goals and 18 points in 26 games. When the season ended, he was on the NCAA B1G All-Rookie Team.
2021-22 turned out to be a whirlwind season for the center. With Michigan, he had 37 points in 32 games. He also played for Team Canada in the U20 World Junior Championship. He had five points in five games and took home a gold medal. Their season fell short losing in the National Semi-Finals to Denver. After that Johnson turned pro and played in nine games in Columbus where he scored three points. He then played in the World Championships for Canada and pulled off a silver medal scoring seven points in ten games. What a year it was for him.
In 2022-23, Johnson failed to crack the starting lineup out of training camp. It looked like he would start the season in the AHL. But when injuries occurred, he got his chance and in his first seven games, he had three goals and two assists. His shooting percentage was off the charts at 25%. It looks like he will get a very long NHL look at the age of 20. He’s a future all-star for sure.
