NHL Future Watch: Matty Beniers Hockey Cards, Seattle Kraken – Matthew Beniers was drafted by the Seattle Kraken with the second overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. The speedy forward has a lot of skill, hockey sense, and a huge love of the game. He could soon be a household name.
In 2018-19, Beniers was with the U.S. National Team Development Program. He was 17 on an all-star team that included Jack Hughes (Devils), Cole Caufield (Canadiens), Trevor Zegras (Ducks), and Matt Boldy (Wild). He had 43 points in 62 games playing with a few of their teams.
In 2019-20, he had 41 points in 44 games. He showed well in the Five Nations Tournament with two goals and two assists in four games. He also wore the “A” with the NTDP team showing his leadership.
In 2020-21, he joined the University of Michigan. Beniers had 10 goals and 14 assists in a shortened season. During that season, he had 3 points in seven games in the 2021 World Junior Championship, taking home a gold medal for Team USA. The center was named to the B1G All-Rookie Team. At the end of the season with Team USA in the World Championships, he had two points in six games to win a bronze medal.
In 2021-22, Beniers would have a tremendous sophomore season. He scored 20 goals and added 23 assists in 37 games. During the season the World Juniors were canceled and later rescheduled. Besides being the B1G scoring champion, Michigan won the conference championship. Beniers was a Hobey Baker Finalist. After his college season ended, he joined Seattle for 10 games. Beniers had nine points. It was obvious that he was going to have a great impact the following season.
Going into the 2022-23 season, Beniers was my pick to win the Calder. In 59 games, he had 19 goals to lead all rookies and 44 points. He currently has an eight-point lead in points and is a lock to be a Calder Finalist. He might see his first playoff action as well.
NHL Future Watch: Matty Beniers Cards Worth Chasing
A nice card to get is Beniers’s 2022-23 Upper Deck MVP Blue Script Rookie. It’s a cool color combination with the Kraken uniform.
His best card is his 2022-23 Upper Deck Young Guns Rookie. This card shows him in action wearing the best of the Kraken sweaters in my opinion.
One last card to look for is his 2022-23 Upper Deck Artifacts Rookie which is serial-numbered but it’s worth the effort.
