NHL Future Watch: Shane Wright Hockey Cards, Seattle Kraken – Shane Wright was drafted by the Seattle Kraken with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. He’s the second-highest draft pick in the history of the franchise. Now the Kraken have made the playoffs, so everything is looking good in the Pacific Northwest.
In 2019, at the age of 15, Wright was granted exceptional status and his junior career started with the Kingston Frontenacs. In 58 games, he scored 39 goals and had 27 assists. The hype train started when he won CHL Rookie of the Year.
In 2020-21, he represented Team Canada at the U18s and had nine goals and five assists in five games. He was voted a top three player on his team, and he won a gold medal. That was the only hockey he would play that season. He lost a year of development which would catch up to him.
In 2021-22, he had 32 goals and 62 assists in 63 games. Wright added 14 points in 11 playoff games. The hype was real, but there was a narrative at the draft that caused him to drop to the fourth position. The Kraken couldn’t let him slip past them.
In 2022-23, he started the year in Seattle, but they had a veteran-laden team. He was sent to the AHL to play for the Coachella Firebirds. With limited NHL ice time, he had two points in eight games. In the AHL, he had four goals and five points in six games but couldn’t stay in there because he was just 19. He went back to junior hockey.
Wright rejoined Windsor and had 37 points in 20 games. He scored three in four playoff games as well. During the season, he played in the World Juniors for Team Canada and scored seven points in seven games. He took home a second gold medal.
NHL Future Watch: Jacob Moverare Cards Worth Chasing
Wright’s best card would be the 2022-23 Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns Rookie. It shows him in his Kraken best, and it’s a nice action photo of this top prospect.
Another great card is his Young Guns Canvas. It shows him leaving the ice. It’s a cool shot because it’s unusual and very candid.
The last card to get would be his 2022-23 Upper Deck Series 2 Rookie Materials Relic. Wright is very collectible, and he is still only 19. He will break out in the next season or two.
