NHL Future Watch: Vasily Podkolzin Hockey Cards, Vancouver Canucks – Vasily Podkolzin was drafted 10th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2019 NHL Draft. Like most Russian players, he would not come to North America right away. However, the Canucks trusted that he would be able to develop in the KHL before embarking on an eventual NHL career.
In 2018, Podkolzin got a lot of looks in international play. He played in the MHL and VHL, and KHL. His play really stood out in the U20 2019 World Junior Championship where he had three points in seven games. He won a bronze medal. At the U18s, he scored four points in seven games and went home with a silver medal.
During 2019-20, he worked his way up to playing 30 games with Ska St. Petersburg. Podkolzin had eight points in those games and added three points in four playoff games. In the World Juniors against players his own age, he had five points in seven games leading Russia to another silver medal.
The 2020-21 season was massive for the power forward. In 35 games in the KHL, the right wing scored five goals with six helpers. He added six goals and five assists in 16 postseason games. In his third World Juniors, Podkolzin had four points in seven games and ended up being voted a Top 3 Player on his team.
2021-22 turned out to be Podkolzin’s rookie season. In 79 games, the young Russian had 14 goals and 12 assists. He was a +7 as well. That was no surprise since he was always ahead of his peers defensively. Now, he was catching up to some of them offensively. When the NHL season was over, he joined the Canucks AHL team in Abbotsford and played in two postseason games. He had a goal and an assist. He’s a can’t miss prospect.
