Auston Matthews Hockey CardsOff The Post: Auston Matthews Hockey Cards, Toronto Maple LeafsSelected with the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews has been one of the league’s most feared goal scorers since he made his NHL debut. And, what a debut it was… Matthews scored four goals against the Ottawa Senators on October 12, 2016 and became the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his debut.

Matthews completed his rookie campaign with 40 goals and won the 2017 Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. How it started was a sneak preview to what was ahead for Matthews.

At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Matthews is an intimidating threat on the ice and can put the puck in the net better than anyone. The Maple Leafs knew they had something special in Matthews early-on and rewarded him during the 2018-19 season with a five-year, $58.17 million contract extension. Since that time, Matthews took his game to another level.

Entering the 2021-22 season, Matthews, who is the Maple Leafs’ captain, amassed 199 goals and 152 assists (351 points) in 334 games. As spectacular as he’s been in previous years, he’s in the midst of a career-year this season and is a legitimate Hart Trophy candidate.

Through 64 games, Matthews has netted an NHL-best 54 goals and dished out a career-high 38 assists (92 points). He recently scored his 250th career goal in his 397th game played and became the eighth fastest player in NHL history to reach that milestone. The seven players who reached the milestone faster are all or will be in the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Alex Ovechkin, Teemu Selanne and Jari Kurri.

In this clip, captured by our own Russ Cohen, Matthews talked about scoring his 51st goal of the season in a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Matthews also discussed his linemate Mitch Marner and gave his thoughts on the recent “Michigan” goal scored by Anaheim Ducks rising star Trevor Zegras.
