Off the Post: Golden Knights Shut Out Flyers on Saturday

The Las Vegas Golden Knights picked up a crucial victory on Saturday. Thanks to some impressive net-minding from goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, and a third period goal from center Cody Eakin, the Knights are now 2-4 with five points in the Western Conference Pacific Division. After Saturday’s win, the game’s top two stars, Fleury and Eakin spoke with Russ Cohen.

First Star: Cody Eakin – Scored Game Wining Goal, 18:35 in Third Period

Off the Post: Golden Knights Shut Out Flyers on SaturdayCody Eakin was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round (85th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He played one season for the Caps, where he scored eight points (four goals, four assists) in 30 games. Eakin was traded after the season during the 2012 NHL Draft to the Dallas Stars. He would play five seasons in Dallas, with his best performance coming in 2014-15 where he scored 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists). The Stars would leave Eakin exposed in the 2017 expansion draft where he was chosen by the Golden Knights.

In 80 games last season, Eakin scored 27 points with 11 goals and 16 assists. So far this year, he has two goals in three games. Eakin has plenty of cards available throughout the years, and you can find his Upper Deck Young Guns rookie card featuring him in a Washington Capitals jersey in 2011-12 Upper Deck Series 2. He also has rookie cards from 2011-12 Panini products as they held an NHL license that season. Look for rookie signatures from Eakin in 2011-12 Contenders Hockey and Limited to name a few.

Fleury began his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2003-04 season after being chosen first overall in the the 2003 entry draft. He’s only the third goalie in history to be taken with the number one pick. His career as a Penguin was fantastic, as he helped the team secure three Stanley Cups. Pittsburgh fans and collectors can find his rookie cards among a number of hockey products from the 2003-04 season including Upper Deck, In the Game, Pacific, Topps and more!

With the emergence of Matt Murray in Pittsburgh, Fleury was left exposed by the Penguins in the 2017 expansion draft. The Golden Knights snatched him up and he’s been terrific so far. He represented Las Vegas in the 2018 All-Star Game where he won the inaugural Save Streak competition, saving 14 consecutive shootout attempts.
