Soccer Future Watch: Alex Morgan Soccer CardsSoccer Future Watch: Alex Morgan Soccer CardsAlex Morgan is in position at the moment to build on her record as one of the foremost players in the  Women’s World Cup. The youngest player on Team USA in the 2011 tournament, Morgan has come full circle in her fourth consecutive appearance. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t secure an unprecedented third consecutive Women’s World Cup.

A multi-sport athlete in her youth, Morgan competed early on with AYSO and moved up to the club level at age 14 with Cypress Elite. There she secured the Coast Soccer League Under-16 championship. Having been named a high school All-American, Morgan joined the Olympic Development Program. She furthered her Team USA connection with an appearance on the U20 Women’s National Team in 2006.

She was the first Golden Bear to be selected in the first round of the WPS Draft – landing #1 with Western New York in 2011. With the financial instability of the domestic women’s professional soccer scene at the time, Morgan ended up playing in three leagues in three years. She was very impactful in contributing significantly to two championship teams.

From 2016-21, Morgan found a stable home with Orlando in the NWSL. An expansion team at the outset of her tenure with the franchise, Morgan elevated the team from completely uncompetitive to the playoffs. In between, Morgan suited up for Lyon, Tottenham Hotspur, and Team USA internationally. Subsequently, she moved to San Diego Wave FC.

Morgan’s first Women’s World Cup appearance in 2011 was immediately impactful, as she became the first player ever to notch a goal and an assist in a final. The next year, Morgan was the leading scorer on the 2012 Olympic gold medal team. From there, Morgan recovered from a knee injury to come in and score two key penalty shots in a championship effort in the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Morgan’s best-ever game, with a record-tying five goals and three assists against Thailand, paced Team USA to a repeat in 2019.

Morgan has seamlessly fit motherhood, novel writing, endorsements, diplomacy and cover modeling into her career as well. There are not many athletes who transcend their sport, but Morgan has and she is far from being finished in that regard.
