Soccer Future Watch: Alyssa Thompson Soccer Cards – Alyssa Thompson has had a recent run of life milestones that don’t generally go together. She had prom, high school graduation, and then suited up halfway around the globe for the Women’s World Cup. At age 18, Thompson is the second-youngest player ever for Team USA on this stage.
A decade ago, Thompson showed that she was on the path to elite athleticism by winning a race with the fastest boy in school at Wesley School in North Hollywood, CA. Physical skills are the absolute foundation of Thompson’s game, as she is the smallest player on Team USA at 5’4”, 108 lbs. There remains the possibility of adding bulk to better withstand bumps and bruises as Thompson goes along.
By age nine, Thompson’s parents had signed her up to play for Total Futbol Academy (TFA), where she competed against the boys. Moving up to Real So Cal in the Elite Clubs National League, Thompson found herself competing against players as much as four years older than her. Thompson returned to TFA while competing in high school. There she scored 48 goals in 18 games over her first two seasons. In 2021, Thompson was Gatorade Player of the Year.
Due to national and club soccer commitments, Thompson did not play past her sophomore year. She was drafted #1 overall by Angel City FC, so she had to juggle playing professionally with her senior year of high school. It took all of five minutes for Thompson to score in her first friendly. 11 minutes in her first league game.
On-field success may be the dominant aspect of Thompson’s bright future, but it is not the only one. Thompson and her sister Gisele – also a hugely gifted soccer star – became the youngest players ever to sign endorsement deals with Nike. Commercial work and the two documentaries that she has appeared in will continue to spread the growing legend. Alyssa Thompson is the Next Big Thing in American women’s soccer.
