WNBA Future Watch: Lauren Betts Basketball Cards, ProspectWNBA Future Watch: Lauren Betts Basketball Cards, ProspectLauren Betts is the daughter of a college (and international) basketball player and a college volleyball player. That indicates heredity as one source of the incredible athleticism in her 6’7” frame. Of course, the dance classes, swimming, and soccer of her youth have also helped Betts with her footwork and on-court positioning. There are many different elements that played into Betts becoming the #1 prospect in the 2022 ESPN college class.

Born in Spain and spending her initial years there because of her father’s basketball career, Betts moved to Colorado at age eight. Fully committed to basketball by high school, Betts advanced to the state championship game three times. She made the semifinals in her junior year, and finally captured the title as a senior. That final season, with 17.2 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 3.6 BPG and 3.5 APG, saw Betts rack up her fourth all-conference and all-state designation. Betts won CHSAA Colorado Player of the Year, WBCA High School Player of the Year and Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year honors for a second time. Selected for the McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand Classic All-American squads, Betts was no stranger to many of these players. She played on Team USA with them. In that capacity, Betts won the gold medal at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup.

Landing at one of the NCAA’s top programs, Stanford, Betts found herself marginalized in terms of MPG as a freshman,. She placed 10th on the team at 9.6. And yet, the Per 40 stats were eye-watering: 24.4 PPG and 14.7 RPG! Wanting an opportunity more in line with what her production merited, Betts entered the transfer portal. She selected UCLA as her destination for the 2023-24 college season.

A FG% of .602 in 2022-23 showed that Betts has the ability to develop into a high scorer with great efficiency. A FT% of .567 shows that Betts has some work to do scoring further away from the rim. However, all the tools for greatness are there. The combination of size and skill that Betts flashes on the court marks her as a player with the chance to help define the 2020s in women’s basketball.
