To find out more about what went into 2021 Topps Series One Baseball’s design, I caught up with Topps, including the Design team, Colin Butler and Kyle Maslan.
Hobby Musings: NHL’s late start date and Upper Deck – I caught up with UD’s Chris Carlin to find out what this atypical season has meant to the company.
Hobby Musings: Hank Aaron got me collecting – I started buying baseball cards when I was about eight or nine. I didn’t start collecting seriously until a few years later. While I don’t remember a lot from my early years of collecting, I do still clearly recall how I became hooked by the sports card world. In the film, The Sandlot, there’s a scene where Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez is visited by the spirit of Babe Ruth. At the end of the scene, Ruth sees a rookie card of Hank Aaron. He tells Benny he’s not sure why, but he asks if he can have it, to which Rodriguez says yes.
Hobby Musings: Chatting with Sara Layton – I recently had the pleasure of connecting with Sara Layton of Layton Sports Cards. I had the chance to find out about her origins with sports cards, as well as what she thinks about the current hobby world for female collectors.
Hobby Musings: Immaculate Soccer will pack a lot of star power – Panini recently announced an exclusive autograph deal with soccer legend David Beckham. As part of the pact, Beckham’s autographs will appear in the company’s Immaculate Soccer line. Aside from Beckham signatures, there are number of other notable cards to chase in the product. To find out more about the Beckham deal and what collectors can expect from Immaculate, I had the chance to catch up with Panini’s Brett Whiteley and Aik Tongtharadol.
Hobby Musings: Bold predictions for 2021 – With 2020 and its big hobby storylines in the books, it’s time to look ahead to 2021. While there’s no telling what will happen with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there is plenty of reason for optimism after a strong 2020 in the sports card and memorabilia world. I asked a number of people around the hobby to make bold predictions for 2021, and here’s what they had to say.
What was the biggest story of the hobby for you in 2020?
Hobby Musings: The biggest hobby stories of 2020 – 2020 was an intriguing year for the hobby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the hobby managed to not only survive, but thrive during the year. Fueled by mainstream coverage and a lot of high-dollar sales, trading cards and memorabilia proved to be quite popular this year. As we close the year, I had the chance to catch up with a variety of people around the hobby and asked this simple question:
What was the biggest story of the hobby for you in 2020?
Hobby Musings: Catching up with Ron Kittle – Former MLB All-Star Ron Kittle has signed quite a few autographs over the years. Like other ballplayers, he’s used his signature for a variety of good causes. He also has a pretty good website, with some unique items for sale and a lot of interesting information about his life and career.
Hobby Musings: Shop owners share hobby memories – Most everyone who collects has a story about how they got into the hobby, as well as their favorite memories of it. This goes for store owners as much as anyone. I had the chance to catch up with The Bleachers’ Ron McCall, Top Shelf Breaks’ Chris Keller and Sports Card Junction’s Chad Weldon and find out some of their hobby memories.
