NBA Future Watch: Ziaire Williams Basketball Cards, Memphis Grizzlies – Ziaire Williams is a magnificent athlete with two-way credentials. He is clearly envisioned as a core piece for Memphis alongside Ja Morant. The sense of responsibility that Williams inherited from his parents, both military veterans, augments his skill set in a very appealing way.
Having taken up the game at age five, Williams continually progressed in his youth and all throughout high school. In his senior year, he helped lead his team to the CIF-SS Open Division title in California. Williams also contributed to a gold medal for the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup. Significantly on the radar at the conclusion of his prep career, Williams earned invitations to the McDonald’s All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoop Summit, although all were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A consensus five-star recruit and the top small forward in his incoming class, Williams became the most coveted prospect to attend Stanford in six years. He made an immediate impact in his debut against Alabama in the Maui Invitational on November 30, 2020, with 19 points and eight rebounds. Weeks later, on January 7, 2021, Williams notched the program’s first-double-double in 14 years with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against Washington. While Williams’s three-point shooting flagged a bit from his high school numbers, the .796 FG% demonstrated his legitimate capacity to improve.
As expected, Williams declared for the 2021 NBA Draft and landed with the Grizzlies via a trade with New Orleans. Williams immediately brings to his new team tremendous defense – due in part to his outstanding length – as well as good secondary ball handling and finishing ability. Possessing a smooth jump shot, Williams is fortunate that some of the greater consistency that he will need for his outside shooting will come merely from improved shot selection. With that development and additional bulk to help him hold up at an elite level defensively, Williams has the pathway to carve out a status for himself as one of the best all-around players in the NBA.
