Auston Matthews: Center – Toronto Maple Leafs

Matthews was selected with the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He was the first American to be picked with the first selection since Patrick Kane in 2007. He had been playing professionally in the Swiss League. The opportunity to work with former NHL head coach Marc Crawford was an invaluable learning experience for the young prospect. Crawford had nothing but greats things to say about the 18-year-old who chose to play professionally instead of going the more traditional college or junior hockey route.

He made his NHL debut in the Maple Leafs’ first game of the 2016-17 season against the Ottawa Senators. He scored four goals in the game, becoming the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his debut. Matthews’ rookie season was one for the ages as he put up 69 points (40 goals, 29 assists) in 82 games. He took home the Calder Cup and helped the Leafs make the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in a full season since 2004.
