Hobby Musings: Look Inside 2022/23 UD Black Diamond HockeyThe Review
Continuing its transition from a more traditional product to a high-end box, Upper Deck released 2022-23 Black Diamond Hockey earlier in the year. Each box only has one pack, but each pack is touted to contain six premium cards with a variety of hits. In addition to some nice veteran hits, Black Diamond also boasts cards from an impressive rookie class that includes Matty Beniers and Owen Power.

I didn’t come away with an autograph in my box, but I did pull a sweet triple diamond relic of Blackhawks youngster Lukas Reichel. Numbered to 99, the card contained three diamonds that were noted as being lab created. The one bummer with the card is that the corners did come a little dinged up inside the pack. Either way though, it’s a nice card, and it’s not every day you can pull some bling from a pack of cards.

In addition to the triple diamond relic, I also pulled a jersey relic card of Marco Rossi. The jersey swatch was one color and isn’t a game-used relic. Similarly, the Borje Salming Team Logo Jumbos card was a manufactured patch card. My final three cards were all numbered and had a lot of shine and nice design to them. One thing I appreciated about all three was that they looked nice and clean while having intricate design work.

All in all, Black Diamond was a fun, if brief, rip. While I wouldn’t have minded pulling an autograph or a relic card with game-used memorabilia, the variety in my box was nice to see. The Reichel diamond card was easily the big winner in my box, and it certainly made for a memorable break. With the nice veteran and rookie checklist, there are plenty of big hits to be had in the product. As such, you could easily find yourself with an exciting card to add to your PC after busting a box of Black Diamond.
